Who We Are
As a proud member of Manufacturing USA, we connect many of the world’s leading wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor manufacturers and end-users with experts from research universities and government labs.
PowerAmerica is a member-driven consortium of industry, academia, and national labs — managed by North Carolina State University and headquartered on its Centennial Campus — accelerating the commercialization of energy-efficient silicon carbide and gallium nitride power semiconductor chips and electronics.
Founded in 2015 by the U.S. Department of Energy as part of the Manufacturing USA initiative, PowerAmerica’s membership includes forward-thinking entrepreneurs, Fortune 500 companies, and small businesses, as well as industry associations, federal partners, and leading colleges, universities, and research institutes.
What We Do
PowerAmerica is accelerating the adoption of advanced semiconductor chips made with silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) into a wide range of products and systems. SiC and GaN semiconductors improve the performance of power electronics systems beyond the limits of traditional silicon-based designs.
We’re working to make these WBG semiconductor technologies cost-competitive with traditional power electronics and reduce the perceived risk that’s inherent with this new technology.
With the backing of the Department of Energy and the expertise of top researchers, we exchange knowledge and processes — and provide unparalleled access to an educated workforce. This enables U.S. industry to develop more innovative power electronics products and systems.
